Maryland martial arts schools know focus is something that is hard for people to keep. It is even difficult for people who are disciplined. Which means it more difficult for people who don’t know how to prioritize task and stay focused. People like are easily distracted by the world around them.An insect like a fly entering the room will be enough to distract them completely. Some will be able to get back work and ignore it. Others will have to stop what they are doing to remove the fly. The people who have no discipline at all will stop what they are doing to try to remove the fly then they will switch to a completely different task. They get so distracted that they don’t finish the original task that they were doing. Procrastination then takes place and focus is completely lost. Women self defense classes use the support of their partner to stay on track. Some people don’t have that luxury, but the trick is to figure out how to stop yourself from losing focus in the beginning and how to get yourself back on track if you do.

The best way to keep your focus on a task is to say to yourself ‘The sooner I get this done, the sooner I can do something else that I want to do’.You have to work diligently to get the task done so you can move on. The attention span of adults isnt’ that long especially if it is for something that they are not interested in. If you need help with developing the need for urgency you can time yourself. When you have to work within a certain time frame there is a sense of urgency to complete the task. Take 25-minutes to work on what needs to be done without distractions. In the 25-minute time frame you can’t use social networking sites, phones, eat food, etc until the time is complete. The task might take longer than 25-minutes, but spend 25-minutes at a time on it. If you don’t complete the task in 25 minutes you’ll take a 5 minute break then give yourself another 25 minutes to finish. You have 5 minutes to check your phone for an emergency, but when your 5 minutes are up you go right back to the task. You’ll continue this until your are finished with your task.
