One significant habit separates the top 5% of people who win in life from the other 95%, who just play - setting goals and working hard and smart to achieve them. If you are in that 95% then do not give up, as there is nothing inherently wrong with you, it is just a case of never having been properly educated in goal setting.

Note the part about working hard and smart, as it is critical. Of the 95% of people who are not winners, lots of them may well set goals, but that is all they do, they just set them and then forget about them.

So, it is time to evaluate yourself. Firstly, are you setting goals? Secondly, are you working hard?, Thirdly, are you working smart?

Should you have answered ‘no’ to any of those questions, then it is time to change your approach. It is also time to change your approach if you answered ‘yes’ to all of them, but things are still not working out for you, as you must be either setting the wrong type of goals, not be working hard enough, or not be working smart enough.

A goal setting system that you should consider is one created by Lanny Bassham, who is a 3 times World Champion & Olympic Gold Medalist. An summary of that system is as follows…

1) Decide exactly what you want.

2) Decide by what date you want to achieve it by.

3) Establish what you stand to gain from it.

4) Prepare for the likely obstacles that you will come across.

5) Evaluate what you will lose (time, people, money, etc.) in your pursuit of it.

6) Write an overall action plan.

7) Create a daily routine / timetable based on your overall plan of action.

8) Start right now, not next week, month or year.

9) Have future goals in place to push you on after achieving the first one.

10) Never stop until you have achieved what you set out to do.
